Understanding Old Testament Prophesy
Today will be the last post on understanding OT prophecy: a look at Joel 2 and Acts 2. I just want to wrap it all up with a few conluding remarks. I would love to hear back from you, and get your input on these passages.
CONCLUSION
Joel prophetically predicted the coming Day of the Lord in Joel 2:28-32, and this Day of the Lord was in some way fulfilled at in Acts 2:14-21.
JOEL 2:28-32
28 “It will come about after this
That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind;
And your sons and daughters will prophesy,
Your old men will dream dreams,
Your young men will see visions.
29 “Even on the male and female servants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
The Day of the Lord
30 “I will adisplay wonders in the sky and on the earth,
Blood, fire and columns of smoke.
31 “The sun will be turned into darkness
And the moon into blood
Before the bgreat and awesome day of the Lord comes.
32 “And it will come about that awhoever calls on the name of the Lord
Will be delivered;
For bon Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
There will be those who cescape,
As the Lord has said,
Even among the survivors whom the Lord calls.
ACTS 2:14-21
14 But Peter, taking his stand with athe eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words.
15 “For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, afor it is only the third hour of the day;
16 but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel:
17 ‘And it shall be in the last days,’ God says,
‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all 1mankind;
And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
And your young men shall see visions,
And your old men shall dream dreams;
18 Even on My bondslaves, both men and women,
I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit
And they shall prophesy.
19 ‘And I will grant wonders in the sky above
And signs on the earth below,
Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke.
20 ‘The sun will be turned into darkness
And the moon into blood,
Before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come.
21 ‘And it shall be that aeveryone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
Sensus Plenior, using its interpretation 1 Peter 1:10-11, stipulates that the prophet Joel was ignorant of the exact meaning of his prediction. This, however, does not properly account for the original determinative meaning of a prophetic prediction, and consequently cannot determine how Peter interpreted Joel’s prophecy in Acts 2:14-21.
However, if one accepts the view that there is more than one referent to a specific prediction, then it is possible to properly account for the original determinative meaning of Joel’s prohpecy and determine how Peter interpreted it.
In Joel 2:28-32 Joel predicted the Day of the Lord in which God would pour out His spirit on “all mankind.” The fulfillment of this prophecy is inaugurated in Acts 2:14-21 at the day of Pentecost. Peter’s message to the crowd in Jerusalem represents the first in a series of events that will lead to the ultimate fulfillment of Joel 2:28-32 at the second coming of Christ.
CONCLUSION
